Rebel Selves Smartphone Self-portrait Workshop

The workshop, designed to span approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, will begin with Dawn Woolley’s brief talk and introduction to her #RebelSelves installation, currently on show at Diskurs Berlin. This interactive workshop empowers attendees to express themselves artistically, fostering self-exploration and creativity at different levels. Woolley will invite participants to develop characters using masks and gestures and use their smartphones to produce their #RebelSelves selfies.
Dawn Woolley‘s thought-provoking installation, “Rebel Selves,” confronts societal norms surrounding gender and beauty within selfies. Visitors can capture queer selfies that defy these norms and question traditional ideals. Woolley employs glitch and abstraction techniques to disrupt conventional modes of perception, urging a reevaluation of normative standards. The project aims to liberate individuals from marketable, individualistic identities and embrace a more inclusive and non-binary self-concept.
Der Workshop, der etwa 1,5 bis 2 Stunden dauern wird, beginnt mit einem kurzen Vortrag von Dawn Woolley und einer Einführung in ihre Installation #RebelSelves, die derzeit bei Diskurs Berlin zu sehen ist. Dieser interaktive Workshop gibt den Teilnehmern die Möglichkeit, sich selbst künstlerisch auszudrücken und fördert die Selbsterkundung und Kreativität auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Woolley wird die Teilnehmer auffordern, mithilfe von Masken und Gesten Charaktere zu entwickeln und mit ihren Smartphones ihre #RebelSelves-Selfies zu machen.
Dawn Woolleys zum Nachdenken anregende Installation "Rebel Selves" konfrontiert gesellschaftliche Normen in Bezug auf Geschlecht und Schönheit in Selfies. Die Besucher können queere Selfies aufnehmen, die diesen Normen trotzen und traditionelle Ideale infrage stellen. Woolley setzt Glitch- und Abstraktionstechniken ein, um konventionelle Wahrnehmungsweisen zu stören und eine Neubewertung normativer Standards anzuregen. Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, den Einzelnen von vermarktbaren, individualistischen Identitäten zu befreien und ein umfassenderes und nicht-binäres Selbstkonzept zu fördern.

Session 1
Clément Claudius's mix of street artistry and conceptual art, combined with a touch of humour and political commentary, makes his work perfect for the "Joy & Revolution" open call.
Clément Claudius is a conceptual artist who mixes art in public spaces, photography, sculpture and performance. His productions have elements of poetry, philosophy, politics, and criticism, with twists of humour that engage the viewer in a dialogue. Clément started his artistic journey at 16, fascinated by the power of spray paint: "Art can change the World !" Although he pursued a career in Science, he continued to create on the side and eventually graduated in fine arts from the UdK Berlin in 2022.
Session 2
Hara Shin's film and multimedia installation work, which dismantles the hierarchies between technology, nature, and humanity- is highly relevant to the "Joy & Revolution" theme. Using fragmented images and nonlinear narratives, she explores the relationship between natural and artificial, human and non-human, and reveals the fluidity of reality.
Hara Shin is a Berlin-based multimedia artist who uses film and installations to challenge the hierarchy between technology, nature, and humanity. Her works reconstruct the relationships between the natural and artificial, exploring alternative experiences and sensory perceptions. Her art reveals the fluid traces of sensory cognition, fragmented identity, and replaced reality.
Dawn Woolley's feminist critique of gender representations in media and consumer culture and her exploration of self-tracking practices through a queer, feminist, and anti-capitalist lens aligns perfectly with the theme of "Joy & Revolution." Her work challenges the idea of personal responsibility and highlights the social impacts of health, making her an ideal choice for this open call.
Dawn Woolley includes performance, photography, video, and installation, exploring representations of gender in media and consumer culture. Through a feminist lens, Woolley uses appropriate visual language to expose and critique stereotypes and idealized gendered bodies. Woolley's still-life work, such as Pacifier and Hysterical Selfies, portrays the ageing body through commodities. Woolley examines self-tracking practices and health ideology from a queer, feminist, and anti-capitalist perspective, highlighting the inequality at the heart of personal responsibility.

"Joy & Revolution" werden im gesellschaftlichen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Diskurs häufig debattiert. Freude ist ein vielschichtiges Konzept und eine Möglichkeit, das Leben zu bejahen, Spitzenleistungen zu erzielen und verschiedene Ebenen der Realität zu verstehen. Karl Marx betrachtete die Revolution als entscheidend für den sozialen Wandel und die Überwindung der Ungerechtigkeiten des kapitalistischen Systems.
Manche behaupten, dass Freude eine Revolution inspirieren kann, indem sie unterdrückerische Systeme infrage stellt, während andere meinen, dass eine Revolution durch ein kollektives Zielgefühl Freude bringen kann. Die Beziehung zwischen Joy & Revolution ist komplex, da sich beide gegenseitig beflügeln können. Das Verständnis dieser Konzepte ist für die Schaffung von sozialem Wandel und Transformation unerlässlich.

Hara Shin´s Film und Multimedia-Installation, die die Hierarchien zwischen Technologie, Natur und Mensch aufbricht, ist für das Thema "Joy & Revolution" von großer Bedeutung. Mit fragmentierten Bildern und nicht linearen Erzählungen erforscht sie die Beziehung zwischen natürlich und künstlich, menschlich und nicht-menschlich und zeigt die Flüchtigkeit der Realität.
Hara Shin ist eine in Berlin lebende Multimediakünstlerin, die mit ihren Filmen und Installationen die Hierarchie zwischen Technologie, Natur und Mensch infrage stellt. Ihre Arbeiten rekonstruieren die Beziehungen zwischen dem Natürlichen und dem Künstlichen und erforschen alternative Erfahrungen und Sinneswahrnehmungen. Ihre Kunst offenbart die fließenden Spuren von sensorischer Wahrnehmung, fragmentierter Identität und ersetzter Realität.
Dawn Woolley´s feministische Kritik an Geschlechterdarstellungen in den Medien und in der Konsumkultur und ihre Erforschung von Selbstverfolgungspraktiken durch eine queere, feministische und antikapitalistische Linse passen perfekt zum Thema "Freude & Revolution". Ihre Arbeit stellt die Idee der persönlichen Verantwortung infrage und hebt die sozialen Auswirkungen der Gesundheit hervor, was sie zu einer idealen Wahl für diese offene Ausschreibung macht.
Dawn Woolley setzt sich in ihren Arbeiten aus Performance, Fotografie, Video und Installation mit der Darstellung von Geschlecht in Medien und Konsumkultur auseinander. Open Call 2023
Joy & Revolution
Joy & Revolution invites applications from artists, curators, programmers, and arts & tech gurus to the third edition of Open Call JOY & Revolution.
We all have different levels of identities and local backgrounds, but art and technical language remain universal.
Joy and revolution are two very different concepts, but they can be related in some ways. One way, joy and revolution can be driven by a desire for change and a belief in the possibility of different words or personal utopia.
With this open call, you can show us your Joy & Revolution.
DESCRIPTION
- Each project can take different forms, such as installations, media art, research projects, interactive games or data-driven art, such as using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Selected 2 solo or group exhibitions will last from 4 to 6 weeks.
DURATION
- The selected two projects are planned to present from May to August 2023.
DEADLINE
- Submission Deadline: February 24, 2023
ELIGIBILITY
- Artists, curators, communities, programmers, and arts & tech gurus are encouraged to apply.

Joy & Revolution lädt Künstler, Kuratoren, Gemeinschaften, Programmierer und Kunst- und Technikgurus ein, sich für die dritte Ausgabe des Open Call JOY & Revolution zu bewerben.
Wir alle haben unterschiedliche Identitäten und lokale Hintergründe, aber Kunst und technische Sprache bleiben universell. Solo Exhibition & Curatorial Project
This program is designed to support the artists, curators and creative individuals
to fight back against the COVID-19 disaster.
Think about the alarming crises in the world. The spreading pandemic, racism and discrimination, growing far-right propaganda, international terrorism, and climate change are to name a few of the perceived threats to our existence. Some people are paralyzed by uncertainty in this unpredictable time, and yes, we are also confronted with severe socio-economic problems. In addition, this unexpected crisis has unfortunately accelerated the rate of restrictions on civil liberties and mass surveillance methods have uninterruptedly risen.
Even if it may sound utopian, we are forced to think about new models of “how we live” in these perilous times. The image of “Utopia” maybe a romantic and unrealistic concept but it is an urgent one as we try to revise our current problems.
Under the title ‘It may sound utopian’, DISKURS Berlin launches the second round of the Exhibition-Relay in 2021 to attract, select, and provide an opportunity to artists, curators, and creative individuals.
In the first Exhibition-Relay 2020, 16 artists and 2 guest curators were chosen and created 11 exhibitions which received attention from the public and the press. For the past program please visit

With the second round of the Exhibition-Relay in 2021, we encourage creative thinkers to create personal utopias in this unpredictable and vulnerable world.
This project is specifically designed to be viewed through the windows of DISKURS Berlin as our doors remain closed. With the exhibitions changing every two weeks, this fast-paced exhibition program aims to support the art scene to fight back against the COVID-19 crisis.

코로나19 로 인하여 전 세계 다수 전시가 연기, 취소되었습니다. 비영리 전시공간 & 레지던시 프로그램을 진행하는 디스쿠어스 베를린은 그간 대관전이 아닌 오로지 초대전을 진행한 까닭에 소수의 미술인만 참여 가능했습니다.
그러나, 위기가 기회라는 말이 있습니다. 물리적 거리를 지키면서도 오프라인 전시를 하고자 합니다. 전시장으로 들어 올 수는 없지만, 거리 창문을 통하여 작품을 볼 수 있으며 시간제한이 없습니다. 선정된 프로그램은 디스쿠어스 베를린 홈페이지, 소셜미디어, 온라인 광고 매체 등을 통하여 홍보할 예정입니다. 작가, 큐레이터 여러분의 많은 관심과 지원 부탁드립니다.
